Woman Pays For Firefighter's Meal And Get's More Than She Expected
AUGUST 7, 2015
Two firefighters walk into a diner... This isn't the start of a joke, it's one of the best stories in the news recently. After a long night doing their job in the midst of a huge fire, these two firefighters were hungry. They hadn't eaten in a day, and the fire they just fought had taken its toll. They came into the diner and sparked a conversation with their waitress.
Liz Woodward was working her shift at the Route 130 Diner in New Jersey when she saw two firefighters sitting in her section. After speaking with them she found out they had just been battling a blaze for 12 hours. She decided to pay it forward and take care of their bill out of her own pocket. When it came time to give them the bill it simply read this:
Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you for all that you do; for serving others & for running into the places everyone else runs away from. Thank you for being bold and badass everyday! Fueled by fire and driven by courage, what an example you are. Get some rest.
"This was their first meal in over 24 hours; the least I could do was buy it for them for all they do every day," Liz said. The firefighters were so taken by her gesture that they went home and posted about it on Facebook. They urged their friends to visit her at the diner and leave a big tip. Then they found out she was raising money for her handicapped father. They spread the word and her crowdfunding campaign skyrocketed. She needed $17,000 for the wheelchair accessible van, she's raised over $60,000. "All that I did was pay for their breakfast and I didn't think that anything would come about it besides that they would just leave with a smile." A lot more came, and it was well deserved.
